Clay visits Pompeys Pillar National Monument along the Yellowstone River east of Billings, Montana. On Lewis and Clark’s return journey from the Pacific Coast, William Clark stopped at the prominent sandstone outcropping in July 1806. He carved his name and the date on the spot, which is still visible today.
