The Logistics of a Constitutional Convention

If the U.S. determined to write a new constitution to address weaknesses in the current (1787) charter and bring it up to date with the needs and challenges of the 21st century, how would it be organized? Is it even possible in the age of 24-7-365 media, powerful lobbies and special interests, and a dearth of civics education in America? What has been the experience of other major democracies when they have attempted to revise or replace their constitutions? How would we select delegates and how many? Could they be sequestered (like jurors) for the duration of the convention? What sort of training and preparation would they receive? Most people reckon that it would simply be impossible to create and maintain the conditions under which a constitutional convention could do its work. Together we will attempt to imagine the planning and protocols that would lead to success.

Constitutional scholar Beau Breslin of Skidmore College will join Clay for the first session to talk about how constitutional revision has fared in other countries.
